China’s Urban, Housing and Environmental Issues

CALL FOR PAPER

China’s urbanization rate has been increasing by about one percentage point peryear, from 26 percent in 1990 to 53.7 percent in 2013. Every year 10 to 15 millionpeople move into cities. Such huge migration inflow, especially the rural-to-urbanmigration, contributes to China’s amazing 10% annual economic growth rate in the pasttwo decades. In the meanwhile, urban economy, housing market and environmentalperformance have dramatically changed in Chinese cities in recent years. It providesvaluable research opportunities for young scholars to conduct high-quality research onChina’s urban, housing and environmental issues.

Since founded in 2010, Hang Lung Center for Real Estate at TsinghuaUniversity has been working on the academic and policy research in the fields of realestate, housing policy, land management, and regional and urban development. Thisyear Hang Lung Center for Real Estate will hold a paper competition in order to callfor strong research interest in the frontier research of these fields, with “China’s Urban,Housing and Environmental Issues” as its main theme. The following areas arewelcome for this paper competition. The participators may have opportunities to obtainconstructive suggestion and feedback from international journal editors and scholars.

1. Urbanization and urban development

2. Housing supply, demand and prices

3. Urban transportation and land use

4. Environmental and sustainable development

5. Papers enriching the understanding of urban, housing and environmentaleconomics in China

Participants:

All young scholars, including Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral fellows or juniorfaculty, both within China and abroad, who have not obtained the PhD degree yet or arewithin 10 years after obtaining their PhD degree, are warmly welcomed to thiscompetition.

The participant should submit his/her paper to the 4th International Workshopon Regional, Urban, and Spatial Economics in China – “China’s New Urbanization andHousing Market” which will be held in Tsinghua University, Beijing, on June 6-7(Saturday-Sunday), 2015. When submitting their abstracts/papers to the Workshop, theparticipants should also submit the completed application form (blank form in theAppendix) clearly indicating that they participate in this paper competition, and alsoattach their current CV. If the participant’s paper is selected by the Workshop for oralpresentation, he/she should be able to attend the Workshop and present his/her workthere. We will arrange a special session with 4-6 high-quality papers chosen from thecompetition submissions, and the journal editors will serve as the discussants of thesepapers and provide valuable comments.

Process and Language:

Participants are required to submit their abstract or full papers to the Workshopbefore February 1, 2015, and full papers are required byMay 1, 2015, to facilitate thework of the organizing committee to review them. The announcement of the finalists'list and award presentation will be on the welcome dinner during the Workshop.

All papers should be written in English.

Selection Criteria:

1. All articles submitted must be unpublished papers. The maximum word countis 8,000, excluding Tables, Figures , References and Appendices.

2. Evaluation criteria will include: quality of proposals, structure and coherenceof the arguments, adoption of international frontier theories, results withoriginal and practical value.

3. Rigorous academic research papers are strongly preferred.

4. The Evaluation Committee of this paper competition is a subgroup in the Scientific Committee of the Workshop, consisting of the journal editorsand the organizers of past RUSE Workshops.

Rewards:

Three finalists will be selected by the Evaluation Committee with one WinningPrize and two Nomination Prizes. The Winning Prize will be awarded 8,000 RMB whilethe Nomination Prize with 3,000 RMB. The awarding ceremony will be arrangedonthe welcome dinner during the 4thRUSE Workshop, June 6-7, at Tsinghua University,Beijing, P. R. China.
