Prof. Arie Kuyvenhoven is a professor emeritus of Development Economics at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. He achieved his PhD in Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam, and served as director international cooperation of the Netherlands Economic Institute, Rotterdam. For the next 20 years Prof. Arie Kuyvenhoven was in charge of the Development Economics Group at Wageningen University, where he directed various research cooperation projects in West Africa, Costa Rica, Pakistan, Indonesia and China. He was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Head of the Department of Economics and Management at Wageningen University, and Dean of the Mansholt Graduate School of Social Sciences. He has been visiting faculty at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., and the University of California, Davis, and served on several supervisory boards, including the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, D.C. as chair programme committee. He is an honorary life member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE). His research interests cover the areas of development and trade, input-output analysis and project evaluation, sustainable agriculture, food security and environmental issues.
Course Introduction
Course Name: Impact Evaluation and Rural Development
Course Credit: Two credit
Course Introduction: Measuring the impact of interventions is an indispensable tool to establish accurate policy assessments and evaluations. In the autumn 2023 lectures we will first explain different methods of impact evaluation before we focus on policy issues and interventions related to rural development and finance. Such methods are vastly applied in market economies, but in the present lectures ample attention will also be paid to socio-economic environments where markets are imperfect or fail. It consists of eight lectures:
1. Impact evaluation of program, project and policy interventions
2. Causality, counterfactuals and randomized methods
3. Techniques of impact evaluation
4. Market failure and poverty traps in rural development
5. Social experiments using randomized control methods
6. Risk and insurance
7. Credit and micro-finance
8. Rural saving
