Course Notice: “Principles of Land Use and Urban Planning” by Professor Tegegne Gebre-Egziabher

Instructor: Professor Tegegne Gebre-Egziabher, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia

Dr. Tegegne Gebre-Egziabher is a full professor of College of Social Sciences at Addis Ababa University (AAU, the biggest public comprehensive university of Ethiopia), and he was the former director of the Institute of Development Research (IDR) and the Institute of Development and Policy Research (IDPR). He has obtained his MA degree in Human Geography from AAU, and MSc degree in Agricultural Economics and PhD degree in City and Regional Planning from the Ohio State University (OSU), the United States. Professor Tegegne is a founding fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Social Science Working Group. He has served as a Board member of the Forum for Social Studies, a think-tank dealing with policy and development issues. He has been a visiting scholar at the Institute of Developing Economies (Japan), Michigan State University (USA) and Martin Luther University Halle (Germany). His research interest is in the wider field of urban and regional development and planning focusing on urban expansion and land use, rural urban linkages, urban poverty and livelihood, local economic development, regional development, decentralization and governance.

Course Name: Principles of Land Use and Urban Planning

Course Credit: Two credit

Course description: The course intends to discuss principles, theories and practices of urban and land use planning. It also discusses key topics and debates in urban planning and land use. The course then dwells on the relevance of the theories and practices to the global south by highlighting emerging thinking in urban and land use planning in the global south.
